There has been increasing awareness in our community of the presence of alternative sexual identity and gender roles recognized by the scientific community and adopted by our society. However, excessive social media attention to the subject by teenagers and apprehension by adults from the older generation have created controversy, fear, and prejudice, making it difficult to understand the struggles of these individuals. We have invited Mr. Jacen Wilder of the Tennessee equality project to present on the subject and educate us on ways to understand and work with these new gender expressions/choices.
I am Jacen and I hail from Pegram, TN. I use he/they pronouns and identify as transmasculine. I am a graduate student at Vanderbilt University and a graduate of Belmont University with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and Public Health. I am the Trans 101 Program Manager for the Tennessee Equality Project and the Southern Freedom Fellow for GLSEN, a national k-12 LGBTQ support network. My work over the past few years has revolved around creating educational opportunities about gender and sexuality accessible which has led me anywhere from testifying in front of the Tennessee House of Representatives to college campuses to here!
