Do you experience mood states of anxiety, depression, or irritability? According to Dr. Mathews, it may be because you are in a Passive-active mental state. He will emphasize that we are all sentient beings who exist in the environment of our respective minds. While we all have the freedom to think about whatever we choose to direct our thoughts toward, we invariably lapse into states of passive and undirected thinking. During those phases, our minds tend to drift towards unresolved areas of our lives. Depending on what we unintentionally process during those times, the attendant emotions accompanying those thoughts will likely result in our experiences of anxiety, depression, and irritability. It is important to recognize our passive-reactive mental phases to learn to use healthier “pro-active” mental processes to override the negative emotional states. If we do not redirect our thoughts, we could be trapped in extended negative ruminative states, resulting in mental illness.
